With Christmas only a week behind us, retailers are already giving us a gentle nudge to start buying for Valentine’s Day. My 4-year-old son got Rocky the Robot from his grandparents for Christmas this year. He loves dancing with Rocky and loading Rocky up to see him tip and dump. This interactive toy has a lot of great features that we haven’t even discovered yet. My son’s favorite Rocky phrase is “You’re the boss!” I think he likes being the guy in charge. For Christmas, we got our youngest son, who is 14 months old, a wooden race car from Toys ’R Us. Not only is it the perfect size for his little hands but it is environmentally friendly, it rolls very nicely, and is attractive as well. He likes taking the race car driver in and out of the car and the slot fits his new Apple Grove Pals inside it quite nicely as well. Only $4.98 and not the only wooden toy to be chosen from (there was also another vehicle and a shape sorter at our Toys ’R Us store.) It’s recommended for ages 2+.

Was my son ever happily surprised at the end of The Very Quiet Cricket by Eric Carle. I was too, as I was not aware that it was equipped with its own sound mechanism. I bought it for 75 cents at a second hand store because we have the beloved The Very Hungry Caterpillar by the same author. Eric Carle’s books make perfect gifts for children and with Christmas coming, we can all use great ideas. If you get the paperback edition, you could roll it up to fit into a stocking. The board book is $15.63 at amazon.com, where you can find tons of other Carle titles as well.

Here’s a great deal on a fun set from Misha Lulu. This set includes a shirt, a tulle-trimmed velvet skirt, and a pair of leggings. These skirts seem to be all the rage at the moment, and this is a particularly fun pairing. It is a trendy, if casual holiday look that can be adapted for year-long wear.
