Our sand a water table was a big hit when we got it, but I’m afraid it has seen better days. I’m thinking it can make it through one more summer, but I am definitely looking around for a suitable replacement. This Naturally Playful Sand and Water Activity Center from Step 2 is one of the nicer models that I’ve seen. I love the canopy, which allows you to put it even in a less-than-shady spot. I also like that the water and sand are kept relatively separate. Our table allows them to mix a little too easily. You can purchase this table for $79.99 at amazon.com.

As the long, hot, summer days approach I have been starting to think about ways of entertaining our two year old outside. We have decided a sandbox might be a great way of keeping him happy in the yard. I love the unique beach time design of this bright red Crabbie Sandbox by Step 2, claws, eyes and all. It has a convenient molded shell lid to keep the sand dry and away from any pets and the claw legs double as seats. It is really sturdy looking too and with the lid on this will probably make a great climbing/sliding place for our son too.
As the parent of a child who insists that I join him in most games he plays, I think this would be quite comfortable and spacious enough for me too, as it is 48” H X 46.5” W X 10” D. It can hold up to 300lbs of sand. It is slightly more expensive than some of the other sandboxes available but for size and entertainment value I think this one would be well worth it and hopefully will be useful for a few years to come. You can purchase your very own Crabbie Sandbox at allchildrensfurniture.com for $59.99

Children love puppets and pretending. Putting on their own show stimulates their imagination. This Step 2 Puppet Theater combines these two loves of kids - puppets and performing - into a stage for your child to let her imagination run wild. The unit is made of sturdy poly construction, with a curtain and doors, and comes with two hand puppets. The stage is even lighted (by 3 AAA batteries, which are not included) for dramatic effect. In no time, your child will be inviting you to her puppet productions. My son plays with a puppet theater similar to this one at preschool, and I’ve witnessed how creating roles and their own plays sparks a child’s imagination. This toy won the National Parenting Center’s Seal of Approval in 2008.
You can purchase the Step 2 Puppet Theater at Step2.com for $69.99. For a limited time, they are also offering free shipping.

Imagine the fun children could have playing restaurant with this Retro 50’s Diner made by Step 2. It’s two-sided, with a kitchen on one side and a booth on the other. The kitchen features an oven, fryer, sink, stove, griddle that sizzles, and coffee maker that bubbles. Play dishes and food are also included. It even has a bell that the “cook” can ring when the order’s up. The “waiter” can then serve his “customers” on the other side of the playset, in the booth that has a real, working jukebox loaded with three 1950s songs.
The diner playset measures 37″L x 25″W x 39″H. It does require adult assembly and batteries, which aren’t included. Made in the USA of polyethylene, it sells for $149.95 at SensationalBeginnings.com. If you’d like to give this as a Christmas gift, you must place your order before December 4.
