My son has never responded well to time outs as a disciplinary tool. He seems to behave much better if there’s a threat of having something he loves taken away (such as a toy, watching a favorite TV show, or listening to his favorite music). My sister-in-law, however, has great success in using time outs on her 3 year old son. She tells him he must sit in a certain chair and not talk to anyone or do anything for the amount of time he’s in time out (usually 3 minutes, one for every year of age). As I was browsing the Internet, this rocker caught my eye. I like the shape and color, which would be attractive to children and looks to be ergonomically correct for their posture and comfort. As I read further, I saw that the Hiya Rocker is a functional piece of furniture as well. It has a book bin in the back to store books, toys, coloring books, crayons, art gear, remote controls for games, anything you can think of that your child might need while sitting in the Hiya Rocker. I’ve seen the usual rocking horses and rocking chairs but plush rocking zoo animals are new to me. I like the idea of giving my children a Giraffe Plush Rocking Animal, made by Trademark, for its originality. Who wouldn’t delight in having a creature such as this in their play room? I know my sons would find it far more interesting than the neighing black and white horse we currently have residing in our toy room.

I’m not too sure about this piece of furniture. The Olga Rocker, designed by Sirch of Germany, is a very unique, unusual, modern slant on a child’s rocker. It is made of a continuous piece of bent birch wood and has a seat made of red woven fabric. It is supposed to be more comfortable than other rockers because of the open space in front. The rocker weighs 10 lbs.

I’d have to try this one out, or have my child test it, before buying it. It is a stunning piece of sculpture and one that would definitely be a conversation starter when guests come to visit. You can view it yourself at ModernTots.com, where it sells for $300.

I really like the idea of a Time Out Rocker but I’ve yet to put it to the test. Does it make a difference having a designated seat to go with the designated time-out spot? I think it might, in a positive way. It would be a constant reminder to your child that there are consequences, and that’s a very valuable lesson to learn for any of us. The natural rocking motion may also help to soothe nerves. You might like to place a basket or small shelf near the chair with books that teach lessons or books of children’s poetry, or even a journal. Encourage your child to express himself in all situations.
