I remember receiving a mug of my own for Christmas one year as a small child and feeling especially grown up and important. I still have that mug somewhere, too. My middle daughter, who just turned three, is starting to transition away from sippy cups.  Although it is nice not to have to keep track of lids and seals, her desire to drink messy beverages such as hot chocolate from a mug can be a bit messy to say the least.
