Every child should have a wooden rocking horse at some time during his childhood. It’s a simple yet fun toy that will provide hours, or even years, of enjoyment. This Child’s Rocking Horse with Mane and Tail by Lipper International, Inc. looks as if it would stand the test of time. It is made of beechwood, which is as safe as it is sturdy, and easy to clean: just wipe using mild soap and water. The manufacturers recommend rubbing the wood periodically with mineral oil to maintain its beautiful look. The horse’s mane and tail give it a more realistic look.
Imagine the joy on your child’s face as he wakes up on Christmas morning to find this gift under the tree! HappyMothers.com is selling this rocking horse right now on sale for $49.95, with no tax and free shipping, making it a little easier to make your child’s dream come true this holiday.

There are a lot of neat items inside this Suitcase Gift Set by Wooden Toys, but I would purchase it just for the case. It has a vintage look that is reminiscent of the days my parents took me and my siblings to the “Greatest Show on Earth” - the circus.
This four-piece set includes a yellow snap-suit onesie with a vintage elephant design, a yellow cap with a wooden block design, a matching thermal cotton blanket (30″ x 38″), and a white baby tee with a wooden horse design. The set comes in sizes Newborn 0-3 months, Small 3-6 months, and Medium/Large 6-12months.
The travel stickers that come on the suitcase can be personalized with baby’s name. How cute. I want one and I can buy one (and so can you) for $60 at poshtots.com.

I had to smile when I saw that this is one of the hot toys for this holiday season. Two years ago, I was madly racing around trying to buy its predecessor, Butterscotch, for my then 7 year old. It was a huge ordeal, but I finally found one for only slightly over retail online. While this toy has been fun, I’m not sure that it was worth all of the hype or expense.
It is a great “wow” gift for a horse fanatic, which my daughter, admittedly, is not. The toy is very realistic, making eating and walking sounds, and wiggling its ears. I could never figure out whether it was charming or a bit creepy that, if left on, she would “neigh” at us when we arrived home and opened the front door. One fun story that this toy produced at our house was that an adult friend of mine was completely freaked out by it and begged me to turn it off!
In the end, I’m a bit ambivalent about this toy. My daughter still enjoys showing it off, but she doesn’t really play with it. My toddler hasn’t really taken notice of it yet. After two years, she still works, but her tail has fallen off.
I think in the end, a lot depends on the child. If you want to bring this pony home for an extra special holiday, you can purchase one for $279.99 at toysrus.com. One small warning: there is a giant picture of the horse on the box it ships in. I had been telling my daughter there was no way she could have one for Christmas because they were sold out everywhere. I wanted it to be a huge surprise. Unfortunately, the delivery guy left it on our back deck with the photo facing in and, although to this day she denies it, I think my daughter saw it. So much for our big surprise!

This Horse 3 Piece Set by Mud Pie is from the EIEIO collection and includes pants, shirt, and socks. The horse applique on front wraps around to the back of the shirt and has horse’s tail on the pant bottom.
I love the writing on the top, “Every where a Neigh, Neigh!” Aside from this being a totally darling outfit, it could actually be a friendly reminder to us as parents that we don’t always have to say “No” or Neigh”. Maybe, “Whoa” a few times, but you get the picture. Child psychologists recommend that we pay attention to how we speak to our children. If everything is a “no” then they tend to see their horizons as limited. We need to learn to use a little re-direction in a positive way.
The Horse 3 Piece Set comes in size 0-6 mos for $25 at smartypantskid.com.

This rocking rabbit from the Scandinavian company Playsam is a fun and modern alternative to traditional rocking horses. Designed by award-winning artist Bjorn Dahlstrom, this rabbit is stylish and silly all in one. He would brighten any child’s room or play space. I think he would blend in well with many of the blue adn red themed rooms and furniture that are popular at the moment.
The Playsam Rocking Rabbit would make a great holiday or birthday gift for an active and curious toddler. You can purchase one for $165 at Estella-nyc.com.

This crazy-looking toy has quite a fan base. I have seen thread after thread about the Rody Jumping Horse on some of the parenting boards that I visit, and it was suggested as a gift idea by InStyle magazine. Most people seem to be very positive about it.
My sister’s son had one and really enjoyed it. I’ve never looked into them because I don’t feel we have space for one, but because the toy is inflatable, you can always deflate it for storage. Kids can simply use Rody as a comfy seat, or bounce up and down on him.
The toy is intended for use from approximately age 2-4. As the child grows and his weight increases, you can add more air to Rody for added support. It can actually hold up to 400 pounds of weight. An interesting fact about the toy is that it is actually used in some therapy programs to help children build a foundation for later language and motor skills.
You can purchase Rody for $49.95 at oliebollen.com. An optional base is available for $37.50.
