Sign About Books by Child’s Play

Sign About Books by Child's Play

Many mamas have pondered whether or not teaching baby sign language is for them. With my first son, I didn’t bother because he was an early talker, communicating his needs verbally to me with no problems. With my second son, I’m not sure which route we’ll take, as he’s not the talker his brother was. While shopping at OneStepAhead.com, I decided to look at the under $10 section and found the Sign About Books, “Going Out”, “Play Time”, “Meal Time”, and “Getting Ready.” All are board books that show you how to sign the words baby uses every day. Best of all, each book is only $4.95. For babies 8 months to 3 years, each book has 40 signs to teach your child, more than enough to get you communicating!

Baby Gap Clearance Event

Baby Gap Clearance Event

Baby Gap is currently having a huge store-wide summer clearance event. They have some pretty significant mark downs on summer favorites like shorts and tees (lots are under $10), that make them competitive with the prices at stores such as Target or Walmart. I quite like these cute Signs of the Zodiac Onesies, which are on sale for just $4.99. You can shop the whole sale at gap.com.

L.L.Bean Zip-Off Pants with Insect Shield

L.L.Bean Zip-Off Pants with Insect Shield

These pants from L.L.Bean may not be super-exciting to look at, but they have several great features. Like many popular designs for kids, these can be zipped off into shorts. More impressively, they are made with Insect Shield, an odorless invisible protection from mosquitoes, ticks, and other bugs. Right now, they are on sale for roughly half price. You can purchase a pair in boys/girls or little boys/little girls sizes for $24.99 at LLBean.com. Several colors are available.

Fleece Lined Anorak Sale at BodenUSA.com

Fleece Lined Anorak Sale

Though there are only sizes 18-24 months left, the Fleece Lined Anorak for $26 at bodenusa.com is a good deal. It’s available in camouflage print and is lightweight for movement but warm enough for comfort. Buyer ratings are excellent and I know many an online mama-fan of Boden clothing. Just put it away for next year, if you’ve got a little one whose winter wardrobe needs some sprucing up.

Graco Lauren 4-in-1 Convertible Crib

Graco Lauren 4-in-1 Convertible Crib

I thought this Graco Lauren Convertible 4-in-1 crib was gorgeous when I laid eyes on it, with its architectural lines and simple elegance. The best thing is that this crib, which comes in three finishes—natural, white, or espresso—is on sale for $179.98 down from $239.99.  cribs.com is having a Super Sale and I must say saving $60 is not too shabby for a crib, toddler bed, daybed, and full size bed all in one. Also, they offer other cribs with exquisite details and dark finishes (like the Graco Sarah crib that will knock your socks off at $174.99).

However, if your budget is quite small, there are ways to get cribs for less. My mom and I went shopping for our crib before my first son was born. I’d spotted something I really liked in Sears but decided to check out Wal-Mart. They had something extremely similar for less and we saved even more by buying the floor model. They were about to get new models in and had to clear the floor; I got lucky that day but you can ask at your local stores and find out when they plan to refresh their stock. Just have a pro check it over to be sure all the parts are present.

Lion Chair by Scratch, Toy Workshop Lion Chair, or Larry the Lion?

I think the Lion Chair by Scratch (shown above) is beautiful. Crafted from wood and imitation leather, the lion’s head serves as the backrest and the remainder of the chair is much like a footstool. I’d love to see it in a nursery or play room used as a footstool for a rocking chair or as a chair with a coordinating table. The lion’s quirky smile and cross-eyes are enchanting and the colors are bright but not overdone or tacky. There’s just enough plain wood to balance the orange and yellow, a mixture that might inspire some lovely nursery designs. Its size is 30 x 30 cm | approx. 11.8 x 11.8 in., more than enough for little bottoms. The Lion Chair can be found at moolka.com for $112.99, not a price everyone’s budget can accommodate but this piece of furniture is something that will certainly become a family heirloom passed from child to child.

Another popular option is the Toy Workshop Lion Chair for $69.99. Painted in vivid oranges and yellows with a cute smiling lion on its front, it’s not quite as artistically rendered as the Scratch chair is, but it is less expensive and just as nice for a play room or nursery. Charming in its own sunshiney way, the Toy Workshop seat can be found at Target.com.

If your price point is quite a bit less than the above but you would still like to add the king of the jungle to your space, Larry the Lion Chair is an attractive alternative. Though this chair is a simple folding chair, it is still something to consider, with its circular vivid mane and colorful steel legs. Good for a picnic or just for around the house, it’s padded for comfort and comes with a travel bag. Have a gander at Larry at ToysRUs.com; he’s only $16.99.
